A video message from John Griffiths

John is the Creative Director of the international research boutique Spring. His expertise spans communications planning, qualitative research, brand strategy and insight generation. For the last 10 yearsheran the consultancy Planning Above and Beyond.

John is also a visiting professor on the IE Business School’s global MBA programme teaching the research component of the online digital masters. Open source projects he has initiated include the Research Liberation Front – a pressure group to challenge and renew the UK research establishment, Waggledancers – the art of starting and growing pressure groups for change, and Cloud of Knowing – an exploration of how to use online content as part of sound research practice. He has won the MRS prize for Best New Thinking twice in 2004 and 2010. At this year’s MRS conference his Global Crowdsourcing Experiment was shortlisted for Best Workshop. John is committed to pushing the boundaries of marketing by encouraging his clients to see research as a movement rather than a product or a process.

John has just now flown into Sydney and while waiting for his hotel room to be ready has kindly recorded this short video talking about his presentation:

John also set up whiterabbitMR – a weavr robot who is now wandering round downtown Sydney based around the Hilton picking up blogs, films, locations, music and other postings based on  being rushed and anxious and a few more white rabbit emotions.  He hangs out in The Rocks and Kirribili in the evening and goes out to Bondi and Dover Heights at the weekend (ie that is where he goes and collect content relevant to his emotions.    What he collects gets put out as a twitter on @whiterabbitMR which twitter folks can follow. And the central web reference is here for the curious:

John is a keynote speaker and will be presenting on Day 1 (Thurs) in the afternoon.

Spotlight on Derek Jones

Derek is the Founder and Principal of D&M research. In addition to his stewardship of the company, Derek maintains an active role in providing research services, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge in advanced research methods to both D&M and its clients.

He was formally educated as a Psychologist at UNSW, and has the additional qualification of QPMR from the Australian Market and Social Research Society. He is a regular presenter of research findings to both the corporate and government arenas and is often asked to comment on his research in the press.  He is passionate about organisations and how they can have a positive impact on the people that make them.

Derek  recently won not only the Best Presentation but also The People’s Choice Award at the 2010 AMSRS research conference, and again  in 2011 for Best Presentation at the WA AMSRS Conference, all for his related paper on “What Women Really Want from Men”. He was also runner up in the Research Effectiveness Awards under the category of “Commercial Effectiveness” for his work in the Phone Name industry for Jack Singleton.

Derek also received the award of CEO of the year from The Executive Connection, an international organisation of CEO’s.

In 2010 and to much fanfare Derek revealed his polygraph technique for identifying less spoken motivators when it comes to what attracts women to their ideal partner. The study received much media attention and critical acclaim at the time with three awards to its credit. This study revealed that women not only understate the power of physical attraction but are also willing to compromise on certain traits if the core attractors and detractors are met such as being Loving and Caring but not inconsiderate and rude.

This year Derek is back to give you more of what you want with the brother study to reveal what it is that Men really want but don’t necessarily articulate and all jokes aside Derek hopes to demonstrate that  Men are far less one dimensional than we may think. Through a two stage approach of qual and quant Derek has identified all of the possible life partner attractors and detractors that men might consider when evaluating a potential life partner and then compared what they say they want (or don’t want) to what they are actually attracted to (or turned off by). Like the women study be prepared for a controversial, and sometimes surprising  research ride with plenty of humour to keep you entertained along the way.

Spotlight on Steve van Aperen

Leslea and I have been excited from the minute Steve van Aperen agreed to be a keynote speaker at this years conference in September. So we were thrilled yesterday when we got to interview him for a video for this blog.

Steve is essentially a “human lie detector” and my word he is good at it, but that’s no surprise given his experience.

In ’96 Steve was a police detective in Victoria who had been involved in many high-profile cases, including the disappearance of Azaria Chamberlain. He really wanted to understand why some detectives (himself included) weren’t very good at spotting deception, so decided to visit the FBI academy (Virginia) and LAPD for some training.

From that experience Steve became the first Australian police officer to become a qualified polygraph examiner but felt it more effective to have the skills to detect deception without “the hardware”. From that point this became his full time career.

An interesting comment Steve makes is so very applicable to Market Research “There is no such thing as a bad interviewee; just a bad interviewer. If your questions are not clear, concise, succinct and direct and it allows a deceptive person wriggle room. Bad questions also allow a deceptive person to minimise, justify and rationalise their behaviour.”

”My training can be divided into three main areas: learning how to detect deception; reading, understanding and analysing body language; and how to conduct effective interviews that elicit information,” he says.

van Aperen teaches police departments, customs, defence and government agencies how to analyse deceptive verbal and non-verbal cues and use behavioural analysis questions that exonerate the innocent and trip the guilty. He guarantees ”All participants will come away with useful tools to assist them in detecting deceptive behaviour,”

Steve has been involved in a number of high profile cases including:

* The McDonalds McScratch & Win competition where a number of contestants claimed that they did not cheat to unlawfully gain prizes;
* A polygraph test conducted on the leader of the Democrats Senator Andrew Bartlett;
* A polygraph test conducted on Frank Cole relating to his disclosure that he located Azaria Chamberlain’s body at Ayers Rock in 1981 after he shot at a dingo;
* The polygraph test of Mike Scrafton, a senior government advisor, regarding a telephone conversation he had with the Prime Minister of Australia Mr. John Howard in relation to the “children overboard” scandal;
* The polygraph test of Ron Vigenser the person accused by John Ford of being involved in the placement of 4.1 kilograms of cannabis into Schapelle Corby’s luggage at Bali airport. Ford testified at Corby’s trial in Bali that he overheard conversations whilst an inmate at Port Phillip prison that implicated Vigenser;
* The polygraph test of Gareth Bunce who publicly admitted on Australian television that he murdered Margaret Wagner in 1997;
* The behavioural analysis of interviews conducted by Liz Hayes of 60 Minutes with Schapelle Corby the Australian woman charged with importing 4.1 kilograms of cannabis into Indonesia inside a body board bag; and
* The analysis of an interview conducted by Tara Brown of 60 Minutes with former Guantanamo Bay detainee Mamdouh Habib denying his involvement in terrorism or links with al-Qaeda.
